Use of Valerian has been reported for more than 2000 years, for example, in the 2nd century, the Greek physician Galen recommended Valerian for insomnia. Valerian became popular here and Europe in the mid-1800s until it was replaced by pharmaceutical compounds such as barbiturates. It is still used to for relief of occasional sleeplessness in the US, many European Countries and The Soviet Union. It is included in the World Health Organizations Herbal Monographs and the German Comission E Monographs.
