Product Details Blackberries may just be the healthiest food in the world. An extensive body of literature has developed around the health effects of black berries and other cane berries of the genus Rubus. The emerging picture shows that blackberries contain potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. In a recent study of over 1000 common foods, blackberries weighed-in with the highest antioxidant activity per serving of any food, (24-77 umol trolox equiv/g fresh weight). (Halvorsen et al. 2006, Wada and OU 2002) This is extremely significant in light of the now overwhelming evidence that diets high in antioxidant foods are linked with many positive health impacts.

Blackberries contain powerful antioxidants. The antioxidant and radical scavenging properties of blackberries are primarily due to a class of compounds known as polyphenols which make up as much as 1% of the fresh weight (6% by dry weight).These potent antioxidants include the colorful anthocyanins (mostly cyanidin-3-glucoside at 0.1-0.6% FW), ellagic acid (0.3-0.6%FW), gallic acid, and flavonols like rutin and isoquercitrin. In addition blackberries contain high levels of vitamin A, vitamin C, B vitamins (riboflavin, folate and niacin), potassium, manganese and dietary fiber (7.6 g/cup fresh).
